One Big Vacation Rental or Four Private Domes? A Group Getaway Near Kansas City

After approximately 147 group texts, three calendar polls, and at least one person responding with “Whatever works for everyone else,” you’ve finally agreed on a weekend away.

Now comes the next decision: where will everyone stay?

A big vacation house is a familiar starting point. But separate accommodations on the same property can offer another way to spend time with your favorite people while keeping a little space for yourselves.

At Return To Roots near Butler, Missouri, a whole-resort reservation includes four themed glamping domes on about 30 acres. Each has a king bed, private bathroom, kitchenette, private hot tub and its own outdoor area. Here’s how to compare that setup with a shared rental house.

Start with who sleeps where

A listing that sleeps twelve or sixteen doesn’t tell you how many bedrooms, beds or bathrooms you’ll be sharing. A large house may have an excellent layout for your group—or a mix of rooms, bunks and sofa beds that needs a closer look.

Before choosing, write down who will sleep where. For four couples at RTR, the arrangement is simple: one dome and one king bed per couple, each with its own bathroom.

For families or larger groups, each dome also has two twin folding mattresses in its loft. Each dome accommodates up to four overnight guests, for a maximum of sixteen across all four. Review the loft layout and access before assigning sleeping spaces, particularly for children or anyone with mobility concerns.

How much togetherness does your group want?

Here’s something that doesn’t always make it into the group chat: even when you love the people you’re traveling with, a little downtime can be welcome.

Maybe you’re up early with coffee while your friends sleep in. Maybe one pair wants an outing and another wants an afternoon with a book. A shared house can work beautifully when its layout gives everyone the spaces they need. Look at the bedrooms, common rooms and actual floor plan.

Four domes offer a different rhythm. Couples or households have separate sleeping spaces, bathrooms and outdoor areas, then meet up when they’re ready. Together when you want. Private when you don’t.

Count the hot tubs—and understand “private”

Hot tub arrangements vary from one vacation rental to another. Check whether a tub is dedicated to your accommodation, shared with other guests, or subject to particular hours and rules.

At RTR, each of the four domes has its own private hot tub. With one couple per dome, each pair has a tub associated with its own stay. You don’t have to arrange the entire group’s evening around a single shared tub.

Each dome also has its own fire pit and grill. Those individual outdoor areas are part of the appeal; they aren’t a single communal spa or gathering facility.

The practical question: where does everyone gather?

If your trip revolves around a big indoor dinner, group movie night or games around one table, check the actual seating and common-room capacity of any house you’re considering. The overnight guest limit alone doesn’t answer those questions.

At RTR, groups are welcome to gather outdoors between the domes. Bring portable chairs and a folding table to create your own casual hangout or dining spot. There is no supplied large communal dining setup or large shared indoor or covered gathering space, so plan an alternative for rainy or windy weather.

If everyone being together under one roof is essential, a rental with the right communal room may suit the trip better. If your group enjoys outdoor time and separate retreats, the four-dome setup is worth exploring.

Make meals easy on yourselves

“What does everyone want to eat?” can produce as many answers as people. Settle on a simple plan before filling the grocery cart.

For a shared house, check kitchen equipment, refrigerator space and dining seats. At RTR, each dome has a kitchenette and outdoor grill. These are individual setups, so check the equipment you need rather than assuming there’s a full group kitchen.

You might handle breakfast in your own dome, arrange an outdoor cookout together, and choose one meal away from the property. Our local attractions guide offers a starting point for dining and outings around Butler. Confirm hours and arrangements for your party directly with the business.

Nobody needs to spend the whole weekend cooking—unless that’s the part they look forward to.

Let the accommodation be part of the fun

At RTR, four different themes give everyone a favorite to choose:

  • Wander Inn: a nature-inspired retreat.
  • Pop Culture Camp: nostalgia and playful personality.
  • 5 O’Clock Somewhere: a tiki-inspired escape.
  • The Fur Seasons: our designated dog-friendly dome.

Send everyone the dome photos and details before assigning accommodations. The Fur Seasons is the dog-friendly choice; the other three remain subject to their current no-pets rules even when your group reserves all four.

Compare complete quotes for the same trip

A starting nightly price is only the beginning. Compare the same dates, guest count and length of stay, including the required fees and taxes shown before booking. Read payment and cancellation terms alongside the total.

Then consider the facilities that matter to your group. One property might offer a large shared kitchen and living room. RTR offers four separate accommodations, four bathrooms and four private hot tubs. Those are different arrangements, and the right value depends on how you’ll use them.
